These days, there is an abundance of hair care products out there. But one of the biggest questions you need to ask yourself before you buy all these haircare products is if they are compatible with your hair and whether they will be absorbed well to show long-lasting results. This is where the concept of hair porosity comes into the picture. Read the blog to know all about this highly researched topic and how it affects the quality of your hair.
You may have heard a lot of salon professionals use this term frequently and may have thought of it as a complicated concept to grasp, but like the name suggests, it basically is a way of deciding how porous your hair is. In other words, the ability of your hair to absorb moisture and other nutrients is what hair porosity is all about. There are three levels of porosity: high, medium, and low. Medium-level porosity is the most stable level out of the three.
If you want to find out what kind of porosity your hair possesses, there is a very simple way of testing your hair. Take one clean, washed, and dry hair strand of yours and fill a transparent glass tumbler with water. Drop the strand of hair in the water and wait for the results. If the strand floats in the water, then your hair is low in porosity; if it slowly sinks in and stays in the middle of the glass tumbler, it is medium-level porous; and if it quickly slides down to the bottom of the tumbler, then it is high in porosity.
Now that you have understood the hair porosity test, let us understand the significance of porosity in a better way.
If your hair floats on the surface of the water, then you have low-porosity hair. What it means is the cuticles of your hair are tightly wound around the strand, which makes it difficult for moisture and other hair products to penetrate the hair.
You need to understand that whatever products you use can’t be very rich and dense, as they will weigh your hair down and may make way for unnecessary product buildup. Using light-weight hair oil like the Parachute Advansed Jasmine Hair Oil and conditioners and masks that are non-greasy may be good options for you. You should also use low- porosity hair masks and incorporate steaming with it because the subtle heat will open the cuticles considerably and let the products and moisture penetrate easily.
If your hair slides down the water easily and settles at the bottom, then you have high-porosity hair. What it means is your hair is quite damaged and rough, and the cuticles stay open and wide, unable to retain moisture and hair products for too long. It should be noted that regular use of harsh products and incessant hair colouring may lead to high porosity.
You will need an intense repair hair care routine that includes hair oils that moisturise and nourish the cuticles. You will also need an oil that conditions the hair to make it frizz-free and supple. Coconut oil, packed with Vitamin E, such as the Parachute Advansed Gold Hair Oil, will deeply repair your hair from all the damage and dryness. Using curl creams and leave-in conditioners will work wonders for frizzy and dry hair and keep the curls intact.
Hair with different porosities requires customised hair care, and knowing what type of porosity you possess will help you set a definite haircare routine to keep your hair glowing and lustrous.
Irrespective of what your hair’s porosity is, hair oiling should be an integral part of your hair care routine. Check out the Parachute Advansed Hair Oils and choose the one that best suits your hair.
